Resolved:
A government has the obligation to lessen the economic gap between its rich and poor citizens.
On one hand, a substantial number of philosophers have argued that a laissez-faire, or “hands-off,” approach to economics is best for the people. We have the reasonable people who maintain that economic policy should be designed to ensure that the economy serves all of our citizens.
On the other side of the argument, critics have suggested that the government has no such obligation, and that magical “market” based economic fairy tales will take care of the wealth distribution problems as long as the “government” doesn’t impose any regulation on the process.
This approach to debating wealth disparity will ask debaters to focus on the role of government and economic disparity as a moral issue.
Instead of debating a specific mechanism to resolve wealth disparity, this topic asks debaters to resolve ethical and philosophical issues that exist as the basis of inequality.
NHSDLC — 正反方思路范例
Pros:
The main purpose of a government is to protect its people by adhering to a set of obligations with the basic aim of protecting its people. If a government does not fulfill these obligations, they would be illegitimate, taking advantage of its people and not doing the things that the government was created to do.
UN's Universal Declaration of Human Rights claims that everyone has the right to equality, life liberty, security of person, equality before the law, free speech, dignity, a healthy standard of living and education.
It also declares that people will always have duties to the community set forth to protect the rights of others, so long as those people's rights are still recognized. Protecting the rights of the poor is important as a value criterion because the only way a government could be deemed legitimate is if it adheres to obligations to protect the rights of the poor. Obligations should be demanded to make sure that the poor have their rights protected.
Cons:
Governments do not have moral obligations at all, any more than you car does. The government machine, like a baseball game, operates in a certain way, following predetermined rules or procedures.?Most people have their moral beliefs pretty well coupled with their religious ones. Our government is not to respect any such by law.
In this case, the question would seem to imply there is something not only immoral about the “gap”, but something perhaps government should work to correct. More specifically, shall we take opportunities for creating wealth away from those who could utilize such so as to let those less able to feel better?
The only responsibility a government of free people has is to stay out of the way of their life, their liberties, and their pursuit of happiness. It does not have the responsibility to make rich people give up their riches to poor people. But it has rules like the laws governing monopoly that help keep those giant corporations from blocking the access from those who want to pursue their own happiness.
