美國大學(xué)新生申請和錄取的博弈

上次我介紹了2018年美國大學(xué)錄取率又創(chuàng)新低。其中我分析了最近幾年錄取率不斷創(chuàng)新低的原因之一：許多學(xué)生為了確保能夠被好學(xué)校錄取，會(huì)申請更多學(xué)校。以前一個(gè)學(xué)生申請5-10所學(xué)?！，F(xiàn)在可能是每個(gè)學(xué)生申請8-15個(gè)學(xué)校。每個(gè)學(xué)校收到的申請數(shù)量增加了。這樣的結(jié)果是：贏者通吃！現(xiàn)在讓我們來看看2018年兩個(gè)贏者通吃的例子：

不想看全文的，大意是美國一位17歲的男孩Michael Brown，申請20個(gè)名校全部被錄取！這些學(xué)校包括哈佛大學(xué)，耶魯大學(xué)，賓州大學(xué)，普林斯頓大學(xué)，斯坦福大學(xué)，西北大學(xué)，喬治城大學(xué)，約翰霍普金斯大學(xué)和范德堡大學(xué)！

A Texas high school student was brought to tears in a heartwarming video when he received an acceptance letter from his dream school, Stanford University.?But the celebrations didn’t end there: The school’s decision was just one of 20 acceptances Michael Brown got from top colleges in the US, all offering him full scholarships.?The 17-year-old from Houston said he didn’t anticipate so many acceptances and remains in shock.

“I was certainly nervous,” Brown told news station KHOU. “I study a considerable amount I think.”

Brown, a Lamar High School student, said that several Ivy League schools, including Harvard, Yale, University of Pennsylvania and Princeton, are among his top choices, according to KHOU.

The teen also has his pick of colleges such as Stanford, Northwestern, Georgetown, Vanderbilt and Johns Hopkins. He has until May 1 to make his decision.

When applying to schools, Brown boasted a 4.68 GPA and listed extracurricular activities such as the debate team and Young Democrats.

Brown, who grew up in the low-income neighborhood Third Ward, said he encourages others to not let their circumstances prevent them from working toward their dreams.

“Be helpful. Dream big. Don’t be afraid,” Brown told KHOU. “Be proud of your family, love yourself, love your community and then share your story. Inspire other people to really reach for the stars and achieve their dreams.”

看到這兩個(gè)例子，就不難理解為什么名校的申請人數(shù)每年都在遞增。許多學(xué)校2018年申請人數(shù)創(chuàng)下新高。例如：布朗大學(xué)申請人數(shù)35368； MIT申請人數(shù)21706；耶魯大學(xué)申請人數(shù)35305；紐約大學(xué)（NYU）申請人數(shù)75307 。根據(jù)美國一機(jī)構(gòu)National Association for College Admissions Counseling （NACAC）的統(tǒng)計(jì)， 2013年 32%的學(xué)生申請7所以上大學(xué)。這是數(shù)據(jù)比2008年增加了10%。與此同時(shí)，國際學(xué)生申請人數(shù)每年以10%的速度在增長！

無論拿到多少錄取通知書，最終只能夠選擇一所學(xué)校去讀！這就意味著，必須放棄其它學(xué)校的Offers。這對其它大學(xué)來說，錄取落空。其結(jié)果就是入學(xué)率下降。什么是入學(xué)率？就是最終入學(xué)注冊人數(shù)與錄取人數(shù)的比率。根據(jù)NACAC的統(tǒng)計(jì)，美國大學(xué)的新生入學(xué)率在過去的10年里從48.7%滑落到35.1%。即使最牛的哈佛大學(xué)，2017年新生入學(xué)率不是100%，而是84%！面對這樣的挑戰(zhàn)，美國大學(xué)錄取工作需要調(diào)整策略。其中之一就是使用Waitlist！

什么是Waitlist???簡單來說就是：既不正式錄取你，也不正式拒絕你，需要等待下一步消息。下一步消息取決于入學(xué)率！我的理解是：Waitlist是一個(gè)“半死半活” 的Offer。目前美國大約有40%的大學(xué)使用這個(gè)Waitlist策略。當(dāng)學(xué)生收到Waitlist的通知，一般要回復(fù)是否愿意在Waitlist上等待。對于拿到許多名校錄取通知書的同學(xué)，會(huì)選擇一所心儀的學(xué)校去讀。如果被錄取的學(xué)校沒有特別心儀的學(xué)校，可以通知學(xué)校同意在Waitlist上等待。那么放在Waitlist上等待，被錄取的概率有多大？根據(jù)以前的統(tǒng)計(jì)，一般學(xué)校大概是23%，好一些的學(xué)校是14%。但是像MIT這樣的名校只有3%的機(jī)率！許多學(xué)校對于使用Wailist的策略不公開不透明，許多數(shù)據(jù)不對公眾公布。我根據(jù)自己收集的數(shù)據(jù)編制如下一表供參考 (為了看到整個(gè)表格，建議手機(jī)水平放置/橫放置)。

如果您的孩子沒有被十分心儀的學(xué)校錄取，但是十分心儀的學(xué)校通知您的孩子說在Waitlist上，那么您應(yīng)該如何處理？我的建議是：在被錄取的學(xué)校里選擇一個(gè)最好的，如期遞交押金。同時(shí)告訴心儀的學(xué)校同意放在Waitlist上。等到5月1日以后，得到確切消息以后再?zèng)Q定去留! 祝順利！祝成功！
