Daniel Space, a human resources consultant, said that if you can’t draw from personal experience to answer a question, it’s alright to say something like, “I haven’t been placed in that situation specifically yet, but here’s how I think I would handle it.”

2. Don’t ramble and hope for the best. If you don’t understand what they’re asking, request clarification.

Rambling is the worst mistake a job candidate can make when they don’t know how to answer, according to Mary Abbajay, president of the leadership development consultancy Careerstone Group.

3. Don’t give up and just say “I don’t know,” either. Advocate for the person you are.

It’s OK to admit you have not yet acquired a specific skill or faced a certain problem, said Tejal Wagadia, a recruiter for a major tech company. But don’t just say “I don’t know” when you are stumped. Saying something like, “I don’t know that yet, but I’m willing to learn that skillset,” shows your willingness to learn new things, Wagadia said.

When your interviewer asks if you have questions for them, this is still part of the interview.Sophisticated interviewers will judge you by the quality of the questions you ask. You should be prepared with a series of questions for the interviewers. Have them written down on a pad and get at least three to four questions out with each interviewer. Be sure the questions are addressing the role, the challenges with the role, why it is open and how it will impact the person you are interviewing with.

You must explain how your previous experience qualifies you for the open position. Interviewees that studied the position’s responsibilities and duties and relate their experience, achievements and answers to the position’s requirements show they are motivated and detail-oriented, most importantly, make it very simple for the interviewer to understand how quickly the interviewee will be able to hit the ground running and positively fulfill the responsibilities of the position.

If you’ve made it to the point in the interview process when it’s appropriate to discuss salary, be sure your expectations are in line with other salaries for the given role. You may not get a call back if your salary asks are above what the company is willing to pay — even if you’re qualified for the role. If you really need the job, make sure to compromise and be content with the initial offer that they can give you.
